John Mandyck, chief sustainability officer, UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. has been named chair of the World Green Building Council Advisory Board, further expanding the organization’s commitment to the green building movement around the globe.

The largest international organization influencing the green building marketplace, the World Green Building Council is a coalition of 90 national green building councils that works to facilitate the global transformation of the building industry through market-driven mechanisms. Leading the Corporate Advisory Board, Mandyck will serve as a global champion for the green building movement, providing insight on market trends and partnering with the organization’s Board of Directors to set an ambitious agenda to maximize the value of the global network of green building councils.

“As governments struggle to get traction on issues vital to our economic and environmental future, business is filling the leadership void. Under John’s leadership, the corporate advisory board will identify ways to unlock the potential of green building as the most effective way to future proof our investment in cities and communities. At the same time, we are creating healthier places for people, while working within our increasingly resource constrained world.” - Jane Henley, CEO, World Green Building Council.

During past 10 years, the World Green Building Council has built a global network of 25,000 companies in 96 countries, with a mission to improve the way the built environment is designed, constructed and used by people every day.

“Our research shows that global green building activity has been doubling every three years thanks in great part to the tremendous work by green building councils around the world. This confirms that the green building movement has shifted from ‘push’ to ‘pull’–with markets increasingly demanding no less than green buildings. United Technologies is pleased to increase its work with the World Green Building Council to accelerate the adoption of green buildings to lower building costs while conserving the earth’s precious resources.” – John Mandyck

Carrier, part of United Technologies, was the first company to join the U.S. Green Building Council in 1993. Carrier is also a founding member of the U.S., Argentina, China, India, Singapore and France Green Building Councils. In addition to his new role with the World Green Building Council, Mandyck serves as co-vice chairman of the Board of Directors for Urban Green Council, the U.S. Green Building Council’s New York City Chapter, serves on the Center for Green Schools Advisory Board, and is an official advisor to China’s Green Building Council.

For more information on UTC Climate, Controls & Security’s commitment to green building, visit www.naturalleader.com.

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is an award-winning program that challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.

The first Solar Decathlon was held in 2002; the competition has since occurred biennially in 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2011.

The next event will take place Oct. 3–13, 2013, at Orange County Great Park in Irvine, California. The competition houses will be open to visitors on eight days over two weekends. Public hours will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily:

Thursday, Oct. 3–Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013

What The Solar Decathlon Does:

Educates students and the public about the money-saving opportunities and environmental benefits presented by clean-energy products and design solutions

Demonstrates to the public the comfort and affordability of homes that combine energy-efficient construction and appliances with renewable energy systems available today

Provides participating students with unique training that prepares them to enter our nation’s clean-energy workforce.

DOE Decathlon Impact:

Since 2002, the Solar Decathlon has:

Involved 112 collegiate teams, which pursued a multidisciplinary approach to study the requirements for designing and building energy-efficient, solar-powered houses

Established a worldwide reputation as a successful educational program and workforce development opportunity for thousands of students

Affected the lives of nearly 17,000 collegiate participants

Expanded to currently include 65 participating teams and nearly 10,000 students in three competitions around the world: Solar Decathlon Europe 2012, Solar Decathlon China 2013, and the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013

Educated the public about the benefits, affordability, and availability of clean energy solutions by generating widespread media coverage and harnessing digital tools to reach tens of millions of people.

In 2011, the Solar Decathlon:

Provided more than 350,000 house visits to the public over 10 days

Offered 31 workshops onsite for the public and held a dedicated day of six workshops for builders and industry

Reached millions of readers and viewers in markets across the globe through various media.

Check out this Houston art studio “colony” created from used shipping containers.

The folks at Independence Art Studio in Houston have created a 4 unit art studio space using old 20-foot shipping containers. The building is located on a half acre of land with lots of trees, horses, a fire pit, and even a tree swing. The builder (a graphic designer by day) wrote an interesting post on the studio blog describing his experience with the conversion.

Now that the containers are up on their blocks in the right places, it’s time to cut one side off of each of them. Plasma cutters are probably the easiest way, but the cheapest machine I can find is $1,000 and I’ve heard that welding of any sort can damage your eyes so that you lose color perception. This is much too high of a price for a graphic designer to pay.I look around the shop to see what else might do it. I settle on using a SawzAll that came with a loft we rented in NYC a few years ago.

As you may have gathered, this project was not exactly LEED certified, but it is a neat and the design is über hipster. Basically, It’s another interesting example of using shipping containers as buildings.

What? The use of shipping containers isn’t even green you say? Save it for the forums…
